Missing trips to the real gym with other people 😩 . Throwback to my first time taking the 50kg’s for some dumbbell bench at @therecroomfeilding with @jono.parsons a few weeks back 💪 . Super thankful to have my home gym at this time - hope everyone is staying safe and #stayinghome in NZ 🇳🇿 . Trainings about more than the body 🧠 . When I trained to complete a marathon, I didn’t do it because I wanted to win. I’m a lifter, not a runner. I did it for the challenge. Because I knew training to finish it would involve pushing through moments that sucked. Moments that challenged me mentally 🤬 . I remember one day getting home from a day up the mountain, knowing I had a 25km run to do that weekend. Thinking that if I didn’t hit the road that night, then the following day I’d be sore from snowboarding and may not get up for the run. So when I got home, I put my shoes on and hit the road 🏃🏻‍♂️ . The race itself sucked for me too. I was feeling decent for a while, but started to falter as the race went on. By 30km I knew it was going to be a battle to reach 42.2km. My quads cramped like mad during the last 7km, but with my brother by my side I got to the finish line ✅ . These moments stick out. They’re times I know I was taught lessons. Through the physical challenge I’d set myself, I strengthened my mind 💪 . Training and completing a marathon was an anomaly. However, even through strength sports - which I choose to do because I enjoy - I’ve built mental skills which benefit me at work, home and all areas of my life 💯 . Take a moment. Think back to some times that standout, where you built mental strength through sport. When you continued to push through a tough session. Rest isn’t all bad 🤷🏼‍♂️ . When not training regularly, make the most of this time: sleep more and take more time to relax. Stressing about missing training is unproductive, so use the time to recharge both your body and mind ⚡️ . If longer periods of time away from training are encountered, there is an increased likelihood that reductions in maximal strength will occur. If athletes are faced with an inability to train regularly for extended periods of time, they should try to ensure they train at least once per week in order to reduce any negative effects 🏋️‍♂️ . Train your upper back 👇 . I’m a big believer in upper back training for strength athletes. My favourites are pull ups and rows 🚣 . Interestingly, Brechue and Abe (2002) found subscapular muscle thickness to be the single best predictor of performance in 20 elite Powerlifters 💪 .
