I am a Senior Lecturer in Exercise & Wellness at UCOL. My main research interest areas are related to training methods to improve strength and power, and the effects of stimulants on performance. I obtained a PhD from AUT in 2017, my thesis was titled “Tapering Strategies to Enhance Maximal Strength“. A full list of my publications can be found here.
I am the President of, and a coach for, the Palmerston North Weightlifting Club. I provide strength and conditioning coaching for local athletes, as well as offering online coaching services for remote clients. I have conducted strength training seminars throughout New Zealand, and coached athletes both domestically and internationally. I obtained my Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA) Level 2 S&C Coaching Accreditation in 2018, and also hold current Australian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) Level 1 and CrossFit Level 1 Trainer certifications.
I have an athletic background in the sport of powerlifting; I competed internationally in the sport from 2012-2014 and broke Oceania records in the squat and total. At school, and during my undergraduate studies, I played local rugby and competed nationally in athletics as a sprinter. I still like to practice what I preach and thus, currently compete in Olympic Weightlifting.
